Carter Anderson brought home a gold metal on Saturday along with the state title at 106 pounds in 5A. This is the first state championship won by a Greenwood High Wrestler since 2015 when Steven Crowder won at 160 pounds. Anderson went 54-0 on the year and capped his junior year with 131 total wins. Anderson started the weekend off with a 4-0 win over Carolina Forest in the quarter finals. He then came back later that night to win in the semi finals against Ashley Ridge in a 8-4 match. On Saturday Anderson won his finals match 6-2 against Summerville, securing himself a State Championship ring. Anderson is a 2 x Region winner, 2 time All- Lakelands wrestler, a 2 x state placer and now a State Champion.
Jaqion Williams capped his senior season off with another state placement and beat the overall winning record of 171 wins also held by Steven Crowder. Williams finished with 174 wins in his career at Greenwood High School. He also had 4 region championships, 3 All-Lakelands championships, 2 Upper-state Championships, 2 years of qualifying for state and 2 years of placement at state. Williams started the tournament off with an 8-2 win over White Knoll in the quarterfinals but fell short in the semi-finals to a 3 x state champion from Rock Hill. He came back with a huge win against Wando and finished with a 5-0 win over Hillcrest in the consolation finals. Williams also leaves this week to go and compete at the North/South All-Star wrestling event in Myrtle Beach. Congratulations to both of these well deserved and hard working young men.
Greenwood placed 10th overall in the tournament out of 32 5A School.
